Anthropic Launches Claude Duet: A Work-First AI Agent for Professionals

The new app targets small businesses and professionals with automated task management, distinguishing itself from personal assistants by focusing on data-driven workflows rather than daily errands.

Anthropic has officially entered the crowded market of personal and productivity AI assistants with the launch of Claude Duet. The new application is designed specifically for professionals and small business owners, aiming to automate and manage complex tasks rather than handling simple personal requests. By targeting this specific demographic, Anthropic is positioning Duet as a direct competitor to a growing list of rivals, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo.

The decision to focus on the professional sphere marks a clear strategic shift in how Anthropic views its product lineup. The company explicitly distinguishes Duet from personal agents like Instinct. While other tools might help you book a restaurant table or run an errand, Duet is not built for that purpose. Furthermore, it does not offer a real-time view of its browser activity as it works. Instead, the app is engineered to build daily briefings, create custom dashboards, and suggest actions based directly on the user's existing data.

The development of Claude Duet comes at a time when the AI industry is moving beyond simple chat assistants toward agents that can act on a user's behalf. This broader market trend is driving many competitors to prioritize business use cases. For context, Meta released a version of Muse tailored for small businesses with app connections, and OpenAI’s Dots similarly emphasizes integration with professional tools. Anthropic is following this path by ensuring Duet functions as a background worker that operates independently.

Functionally, Duet completes tasks in the background using its own virtual machine. This allows users to continue with their day while the agent works, only interrupting them if specific approval is needed. The system is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model and connects to over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive integration allows the agent to proactively monitor ongoing tasks and deliver recommendations without constant user prompting.

A significant feature of the new agent is its ability to handle transactions. Duet can make online purchases on behalf of the user by integrating with Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay. However, the company has established clear boundaries to maintain user trust. Sensitive steps, such as finalizing a payment, require explicit user approval. Additionally, Duet is not authorized to trade securities or move funds between different accounts, limiting its financial scope to purchasing goods and services.

Security and data privacy remain central to the design of the new tool. Anthropic released a new classifier that checks every message to prevent sensitive information from leaking out. By default, the agent is programmed to turn down requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification. This layered approach to data handling is intended to reassure business users who are cautious about sharing proprietary information with automated systems.

As of now, Claude Duet is available on iOS and Android devices. It is also accessible via the web through Claude.ai. The service is currently in research preview, meaning it is not yet open to the general public. To access the platform, Pro and Max customers must join a waitlist. This staged rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback from early adopters before a wider release.

The launch of Claude Duet signals Anthropic’s intent to capture a larger share of the enterprise and small-business AI market. By focusing on actionable workflows and secure background processing, the company is betting that professionals will prefer an agent that works silently and efficiently over one that requires constant interaction. As the waitlist fills, the success of Duet will likely hinge on its ability to deliver reliable, low-friction automation for daily business operations.
